Kanuga would listen to reason, he thought. He didn't want to make war against the Russians, anymore than the Russians wanted to go up against the Tlingit. Too much blood would be spilled in the snow. He smiled smugly. By nightfall he would be returning to Fort Anecia with Iuril, and all will be well again.

As he grew closer to the village and could see beyond the houses into the clearing that the houses were centered around, hope sprang forth. Iuril was not tied to a stake outside in the cold. Kanuga had surely been kindhearted enough to keep Iuril captive in a house. And surely he had been treated with respect. Kanuga and Iuril went back a long way, to the days when they had played handball during the short months of summer.

Kanuga would never let anything happen to Iuril, he told himself. He was sure of that.

He snapped the whip harder against the backs of the huskies and shouted at them, the wind cold against his face, yet invigorating. And as soon as he again came face to face with the lovely American lady he would take her off Kanuga's hands.

He laughed boisterously into the wind.
